Salsa del Rio

Student musicians singing salsa music during salsa night

Salsa del Rio became a class at Texas State in the Fall of 1995. This ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of all genres associated with the labels salsa and Latin jazz, both interpreted in the broadest terms.  Artists from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, the United States, and other countries, have contributed to the rich repertoires associated with these labels.  Salsa del Rio is proud to both preserve the work of many of these artists and explore new avenues of creativity made possible by the distinctive musical language first developed in the core repertoires of salsa and Latin jazz.

Salsa del Rio has recorded five CDs at the Fire Station Studios. Que Siga La Tradición was released in the Spring of 2000, Salsa En Mi Alma was released in the Spring of 2002, La Noche Nunca Para released in Fall 2004, Lloraras y Lloraras released in Fall of 2006, and Pasiones was released in the Spring of 2010.

Salsa del Rio is a three-time winner of Premios a la Música Latina and the 2007 winner of the 30th Annual Downbeat Student Music Awards.  The ensemble joins Mariachi Nueva Generación in regional, national, and international recruiting trips and tours.  The group also performs regularly on and off campus, in the San Marcos, Austin, and San Antonio areas.

SDR meets on MWF from 2:00 pm to 3:20 pm
