Latin Music Ensemble Auditions Spring 2024

Texas State Spring 2024 Mariachi Ensemble Audition Criteria

Auditions will be held in person on Sunday, January 14, and Tuesday January 16 at the Texas State School of Music Building. Sunday between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm in room TBD, and Tuesday between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm in room TBD.

Audition Requirements

PART 1 - required for everyone

• Play Perico Loro 
• Sight reading excerpt 
• Play El Son de La Negra 

Part 2 - 

• Violins - Prepare the following major scales in 3 octaves : 
  • A
  • Bb
  • D
• Trumpets - Prepare all 3 concert scales:
  • A concert with arpeggio at the end
  • E concert with arpeggio at the end
  • G concert with arpeggio at the end
• Armonia - Prepare  all 3 rotations/scales:
  • Bb rotation in joropo rhythm
  • E rotation in son jalisciense rhythm
  • F major diatonic scale ascending and defending in quarter notes 
• Guitarron - Prepare all 3 scales:
  • Chromatic scale in quarter notes ascending and descending
  • Bb major scale in eighth notes ascending and descending with arpeggio 
  • E major scale in eighth notes ascending and descending with arpegio 

PART 3 -  Singing required for everyone

• Perico Loro (1st verse) and El Son de La Negra 

Spring 2024 Salsa Auditions Process

• Auditions will be held on Sunday, January 14th, and video auditions due on Thursday, January 18th by Noon
• Submit your video by email to: jrr249@txstate.edu, and kb1504@txstate.edu

If you auditioned on Sunday, no need for further action

Audition musical selection (Violins and flutes are welcome to audition)

Salsa Audition Files

Singers, select and perform two songs in contrasting styles (Salsa and cumbia, merengue and bolero etc)

If part isn't available:

Alto Sax, utilize baritone sax, or trombone part for audition

Tenor Sax, utilize 2nd trumpet part for audition

Percussionists, utilize 1st trumpet or/and piano as guide for audition
