The information below pertains to past auditions; however, they can give you an idea of what to expect for future auditions.

 

Latin Music Ensembles are open to any Texas State student by audition.  Please follow the instructions below:

  • Check the audition dates and times listed below
  • Download all audition music
  • Be on time and prepared

 

 

Spring 2017 Audition Schedule

 

Mariachi Auditions

Sunday, January 15, Room 135:

1:00pm-1:50pm: Armonia

2:00pm-2:50pm: Trumpets

3:00pm-3:50pm: Violins

4:00pm-4:50pm: Vocals

 

Salsa Auditions (held during assigned salsa ensemble meeting times):

Tuesday, January 17, Room 216:

3:30-5:00pm: Rhythm section

Wednesday, January 18, Room 216:

2:00-3:30pm: Horns

Thursday, January 19, Room 216:

3:30-5:00pm: Vocals

Friday, January 20, Room 216:

2:00-3:30pm: Overflow (Sign up here if you cannot attend the previous dates)

Results for mariachi will be posted by Monday January 16, 12:00 (noon); results for salsa will be posted by (coming soon)

Spring 2017 Mariachi Auditions - Music

Download the zip file below and select the music for your instrument.  Singers should prepare up to two mariachi standards and provide their own accompaniment (either live or pista; NO singing along with a recorded singer).

 

Additional instructions:
·         Guitarron, Armonia and Trumpets need to have ALL of it prepared
·         Violins need to prepare "El Querreque," measures 122 – 192.

NOTE: Any student unable to attend these auditions, MUST submit an audition video NO later than Friday, 1/13 by midnight to be considered.

Spring 2017 Salsa - Music

Download the zip file below and select the music for your instrument. (Percussionists, note that you have a separate Zip file and additional instructions below.) Singers should prepare up to two salsa standards and provide their own accompaniment (either live or pista; NO singing along with a recorded singer).
 

 

 

 

Additional Instructions for Salsa Percussionists

 

Percussionists will audition by playing the Son Montuno patterns on Conga, Timbal, Bongo and the Merengue patterns on Conga, Tambora and Güira.

Percussionist are encouraged to play any other Latin rhythms that they may know.

Percussionists will also play Exercise 1 from Ted Reeds' Syncopations book. The following are the rules on how to play exercise 1:

Play 4 measures of time in 2-3 son montuno style followed by playing 4 measures (a line) out of exercise 1. Eighth notes are to be played on the high drum and quarter notes or notes of greater value on the low drum. Do this until you have played the entire page.
