Master of Music in Mariachi Education

The three-summer structure of this degree plan was designed with the working mariachi teacher in mind. This degree, also known as the Summer Mariachi Estudio, is recommended for students who wish to enhance their profiles as music educators in the public school system and who are looking to implement mariachi programs or elements into their teaching. It is also a good option for those wishing to pursue doctoral studies in music education with an eye toward specializing in mariachi education. Acceptance into the program requires dominion of at least one of the standard mariachi instruments or voice.

 

Courses include:

  • Armonia and Melodia Techniques:  fundamentals of playing and teaching vihuela, guitarron, harp, violin, trumpet and voice
  • Mariachi Arranging:  fundamentals of mariachi arranging techniques for sones, rancheras, boleros, huapangos, and others
  • Mariachi Teaching Lab: design of middle school, high school, and university-level curriculum
  • History of the Music of Mexico and other core graduate music courses
